takhi by terraformers

Terraformers began from our love of travel - a shared passion we are so often guilty about as we saw how detrimental mass tourism can be. We yearned for more responsible, authentic and meaningful travel.

That was how Takhi was conceived: a platform to enable travel experiences - authentic and unique local experiences and off-the-beaten path adventures for you.

Our goal is to help you explore the world in exciting and enjoyable ways while doing so responsibly and meaningfully. We work onsite in Southeast Asia and Central Asia to build Regenerative Tourism destinations with Indigenous people and local communities (IPLCs).

impact

We strive to develop impact measurement tools, tracking our goals of contributing to inclusive and sustainable development for IPLCs, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

  • 20% increase in IPLCs happiness indices
  • Establish Regenerative Tourism margins as a stable income source for communities
  • 10% increase in IPLCs sense of pride of local cultures
  • 10% increase in IPLCs capacity to apply and implement the model

Values

Our regenerative tourism methodology prioritises 3 tenets: Resilience, Conservation, Equity.

Resilience

Economic resilience

Regenerative tourism revenue as a supplementary income source for IPLCs. As many of these communities are climate-vulnerable, relying on agricultural production as their main source of income, a supplementary source helps IPLCs tide through rougher times when their crops bring in lower cash. Climate unpredictability also means higher risks for their nature-based lifestyles.

Cultural resilience

Working with Terraformers means designing travel activities with local daily lives and cultures at the core. We minimise disruption to IPLCs’ daily lives, encouraging travellers to take part in local activities - truly doing as the locals do, allowing core memories to form around Indigenous lives.

Equity

Stronger community cohesion

We aim to achieve equitable development, going beyond the tourism supply chain so as to extend financial and social benefits to the whole community.

Conservation

Protecting IPLCs' natural environment & socio-cultural practices

  • Encourage locals to take pride in their nature and culture through careful design of tourism activities

  • Confidence generation from external stakeholders as IPLCs display the ability manage and effectively use their land
  • Protection through awareness generation with travellers

TESTIMONIALS

"Absolutely the most rewarding days I've had in a hot second.

Frolicking in a lake, trekking to a cave, fishing (successfully), making bamboo chopsticks and cups and knives, foraging for and making dinner over an open fire, hiking to the bamboo forest - you cannot tell me this is not pure magic."

"I don't think I can get this easily elsewhere and it is sooooo precious to a city dweller who is seeking to experience the life of an indigenous villager.

The overall experience was fantastic - the interaction with the Red Dao community was genuine and authentic. They were warm hosts and I liked that they were being themselves (without trying to overextend their hospitality such that it feels manicured).

Thank you Terraformers, CIRUM and the Red Dao organizers for such an awesome experience."
